Age 94
Mary D. was born in Mississippi in 1917. She married at age 16 (in 1933) and had no children for 5 years. Beginning in 1938, she then had 3 sons and 1 daughter. Her husband was a builder and carpenter, but was often ill. He had problems with one leg and was in considerable pain. The family had only modest means, but Mary D. worked at all sorts of part time jobs and they saved enough to buy a house in a nice neighborhood. Her husband died about 30 years ago, 3 weeks after his youngest child, Marybeth, started college at LSU in Baton Rouge.
All 4 children went to college. Two became lawyers and one, subsequently, a judge.
Mary D. moved to Lake Charles, LA, to be closer to one son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. A few years later, after Marybeth graduated and moved to Houston to go to work for Arthur Anderson, she persuaded her mother to take a job in College Station, TX. Marybeth had been a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority at LSU and found out that the Tri-Delts had just built a new house at Texas A&M. Mary D. became the house mother for 50 girls, beginning in 1984 at age 67. She stayed in that job for 11 years, then moved for 3 years to the Sigma Chi fraternity.
At age 81 Mary D. finally retired. She stayed on in College Station in a retirement community until 3 years ago, when she moved to The Terrace independent living facility in Houston to be closer to family.
Mary D. spoke about the large family reunions that are held every few years in Mississippi. She doesn't care to travel much any more. One of her favorite pastimes is watching sports on TV. She said she took up an interest in sports after she had 3 sons so that she would be able to have conversations with them.
Postscript: Mary D died peacefully on June 12, 2012 at age 95.
