Mona was born in Birmingham, AL on September 23, 1910. At age 8 or 9 her family moved to Mobile and she grew up there through high school. She had one older brother who died fairly young. There were other siblings who died as infants. Mona went back to Birmingham to attend the Baptist School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse for two years after graduating, went to Mississippi, then back to Birmingham where she got married in 1934. After she married, Mona gave up her nursing career. Her husband was from Philadelphia and fought in both world wars. He moved to Birmingham working for his uncle in a business for industrial rubber and couplings. After World War II, in 1947, Mona and her husband moved to Houston, where her husband worked in a couplings business for oilfield drilling.
The Greens bought a new home in West University Place on Albans near Edloe. Mona lived in that house for 57 years, until she moved to The Hallmark in 2004. Her husband died in 1983. They had a son, who now lives in Los Cruces, NM, and a daughter, who lives in Sugarland, TX. Mona has 3 granddaughters, the oldest being 50, and 4 great grandsons ranging in age from 10 to college age.
Mona has been at The Hallmark for 7 years. Until early 2011 she was in independent living. Now she cannot see well, which means that she cannot read or watch TV and is limited in what she can do. She sees well enough to walk with her walker. She visits with friends at The Hallmark and participates in social events.
When asked to explain her longevity, Mona attributed it to drinking green tea. She has tea with her lunch and dinner, and sometimes in between.
